THINGS TO DO

While visiting the Heritage Town of Lismore and staying at the Lismore House Hotel you can plan a number of Things to Do and enjoy during your holiday. All of the following are right on your doorstep and waiting for you to participate.

Gardens and Forests
Lismore Castle Gardens
Set on 7 acres of land with the castle's 17th century outer defensive walls. The gardens have many magnolias, camellias and rhododendrons. The gardens are open to the public from mid-April to early October between 1.45pm and 4.45 pm. The gardens are believed to be the oldest in Ireland retaining much of their original Jacobean form.

A recently re-planted herbaceous border aligned on the Cathedral's spire gives an impressive show of colour throughout the summer months. There is also a fine selection of magnolias, camellias and rhododendrons and a remarkable yew walk where Edmund Spenser is said to have written the Faerie Queen.

In 1999, several pieces of contemporary sculpture were installed in the garden including one by Anthony Gormley, best known for the massive Angel of the North which overlooks the motorway at Gateshead in the north of England. Throughout the open season there is always plenty of interest in this fascinating and beautiful garden. Click here to view Lismore Castle’s web site www.lismorecastle.com

Cappoquin House & Gardens
Set on 3 acres of land with a south-facing slope, Cappoquin House is an 18th century Georgian mansion built on the site of an old Fitzgerald castle.

Tourin Gardens
Set on 3 acres of land with mature trees, rhododendrons and camellias, it over looks the river Blackwater and the gardens shelter an Italianate House.

The Glenshelane River Walk
10km long, it is now covered with Norway spruce. Red Squirrel and mink have been noted and upstream from the picnic site is a noted salmon spawning area.

Lismore Town Walks
The Towers Walk
The Towers is a nice easy 2.5km circular walk just 3km outside the town in Ballysaggartmore. This walk will bring you through a magical woodland area with many gothic features. Ideal location for a picnic.

Lady Louise's Walk
This is a riverside trail, which takes you along the river Blackwater. This walk stretches for a distance of 0.8km and is ideal for the less energetic. Part of this walk leads back to Lismore Cathedral for those wishing to take a longer walk.

The Town Walk
The town trail of Lismore starts at Lismore Heritage Centre. These can be completed with the services of a trained guide or self guided with the assistance of a booklet, which can be purchased in the Tourist Information Office located within Lismore Heritage Centre. Lismore Cathedral and St. Carthage’s Church should not be missed.

St Declan's Way
This is an old pilgrim path, which is currently being upgraded to make it suitable for walking. Pilgrims journeyed on foot from Ardmore to Cashel via Lismore in the 5th – 12th century.

Knockmealdown Mountains
For the more adventurous, this walk will allow hill walkers to climb the Knockmealdown Mountains. Along this walk is a prominent linear ditch, which is the boundary between the counties of Waterford and Tipperary.

East Munster Way
This walk offers long distance walkers an opportunity to travel through relatively easy lowlands and hill country. It measures 43 miles in distance.

Dromana
Is a lovely walk through a Hindu Gothic style bridge. From there you can access a forest, which brings you along by the river for approx 4km.

Forest Trails
This magical woodland trail is located 3 miles outside of Lismore Town. Here you can stroll through woodlands and view the exocitic gate lodge and bridge that were constructed by landlord Arthur Kiely Ussher to impress a very demanding wife who wished to live in a large house. The cost of building the elaborate Gothic entrance proved so great that the house was never built.

Scenic Drives
A number of driving routes with all the mains areas of interest in the West Waterford area is currently being mapped and will be available from the Hotel and Tourist Information Office at Lismore Heritage Centre.

Shopping
While away time in the Antique shop on Main Street; enjoy the gifts and goodies in the Summer House; and indulge in some Wines from Tom Doorly’s Hand Made Wine and Deli Store. Crafts are part of any town and there are a number in Lismore along Main Street and as part of the Heritage Centre.
Local Shopping Trail:
The Summer House, The Jones’s Gallery, Book Shop, Hand Made Wine Shop (Lismore) Ballymaloe Shop and Stephen Pearse Pottery (Shanagarry) and Cliff Pottery (Ardmore).

Art Galleries
An impressive part of the Heritage Centre, there is a main Exhibition Gallery to stroll around at your leisure. Also, visit the Gallery at Lismore Castle and the Jones Gallery.

Sculptures at Lismore Castle
In 1999, several pieces of contemporary sculpture were installed in the garden including one by Anthony Gormley, best known for the massive Angel of the North which overlooks the motorway at Gateshead in the north of England.
